The LEGO Group remains committed to make LEGO® bricks from sustainable materials

Toy manufacturer LEGO has stopped a project to make its well-known blocks or building blocks based on recycled PET bottles. The material leads to higher CO2 emissions, CEO Niels Christiansen told the Financial Times. Despite this setback, LEGO remains committed to making their building blocks with sustainable materials.

LEGO states they are more committed than ever to making their products and business more sustainable. To reinforce these goals, they are tripling their expenses on sustainable initiatives.sustainability initiatives to $1.4 billion in the four years to 2025.  LEGO is working on making their products and materials more sustainable and circular by 2032. Setting a target to reduce carbon emissions by 37% by 2032 and longer-term, pledged to be net zero by 2050. Which also means they keep investing in sustainable materials.

So far, LEGO has tested more than 300 different materials. Some have been successful, such as bio-PE which is used to make botanical elements and accessories. Other have shown potential, but haven’t met the strict quality, safety and durability requirements or helped reduce LEGO’s carbon footprint.
